Why isn't it by sourced creator?

So apparently on Wikipedia comic creations go by the writer and then the artist, not the person who actually created the character. Why is that? Shouldn't inkers be listed as creators then? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.164.82.250 (talk) 01:29, 19 March 2012 (UTC)

The long and short of it:
  • Most often the "created by" defaults to the story credits of the first story the character appears in. With the Silver Surfer that would be FF 48 written by Lee and drawn by Kirby.
  • It is generally limited to the writer and penciller as they are seen as the ones creating the characters for the story. And the older the stories the more this is relied on since inkers either weren't credited or weren't assigned until the pencils came in.
  • Preferably, a reliable secondary, third party source should be used. That should be done in the articles and then filter through to this type of template. This is something that Silver Surfer needs as there is no declination within the article to the single person credit found there.
  • Convention when dealing with comic book characters, and citing comics in general, is to list the writer first. With FF 48 that listing would be Lee then Kirby.
  • Convention with the navboxes is to limit "Creator(s)" is to limit those that actually created the character for its first appearance, not to include those that have added to the character since. This is to reduce clutter in the navbox and at the bottom of articles. The upshot here would be that if there are reliable secondary, third party source that Kirby created the Surfer lock, stock, and barrel, and that is spelled out in the article, then Lee shouldn't be in the 'box.
