I've changed the Hurricane Georges listing to Hurricane Wilma. Given the currency of that hurricane over Georges and the comparable amount of damage, it seems a more appropriate fit.

I've been adding keys north of Key Largo, and decided they really could be separated from the Upper Keys. I've labeled the new section Biscayne keys because they all are within Biscayne National Park and lie between the Atlantic and Biscayne Bay. The name feels awkward, though, and I don't have much invested in it. -- Dalbury^(Talk) 14:30, 27 December 2005 (UTC)

Is Biscayne Keys the proper term for it? Having grown up in Key Largo, I've never heard anyone use that term. Comatose51 02:58, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

I've moved some keys from the Lower to Middle Keys group. Big Pine Key is the first of the Lower Keys. Thus, West Summerland and Bahia Honda are part of the Middle Keys. --Emb021 19:26, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

I found this official document from the Florida Department of State online: Does this mean that the upper keys are only from Key Largo to just south of Key Biscayne?

According to the document, the middle keys start south of Tavernier Creek, or Plantation Key to Pigeon Key (7 mile bridge) and the lower keys begin just southwest of Pigeon key (moser channel).—Preceding unsigned comment added by Averette (talk • contribs)

The site you point to is dividing up the keys for a beach erosion study, so I wouldn't take it as official. There is no set division of the keys. I believe a division into just upper and lower keys is older, with the 'middle keys' being something on an innovation. There are many ways to divide the keys. Geologically, Eliott Key to Knight's Key have Key Largo limestone at the surface, while below Pigeon Key to Key West, Miami Oolite is on the surface (I can't find definite word on which province Pigeon Key is in). Soldier's Key to Sands Key, just north of Elliott Key, are transitional, sandy with Key Largo limestone outcroppings. (Key Biscayne is the southernmost of the sand barrier islands extending down the east coast of Florida.) The islands west of Key West are again sandy (I believe it is described as calcareous sand). Other divisions of the keys are generally arbitrary and matters of personal opinion. -- Donald Albury 02:00, 9 September 2006 (UTC)

True, on a geological basis, Bahia Honda & Spanish Harbor Keys are more similar to the mid-upper Keys than the lower ones. But on a visual impact, (looking at a map, satellite photo, proximity in travel, etc.) a 7 mile gap between islands would definitely seem like a good place to divide. As for the middle/upper dividing line, I guess it's subjective, but as a guess, I'd say the Channel #5 in between Long Key/Fiesta Key & Craig Key would be at the top of the list, since it's a deep water channel with an extremely high bridge (the highest in the Keys). Why include Craig Key as being middle when it's on the upper end of the deep channel #5?

Different sources will divide the keys in different ways. Those differing sources need to be noted and cited somewhere. You can't decide where division points should be, as that would be OR. -- Donald Albury 11:43, 9 September 2006 (UTC)

That was my point. Since "different sources will divide the keys in different ways" it's subjective and no one should have the right to decide. Therefore, why not get rid of the divisions altogether? --Marc Averette 12:55, 9 September 2006 (UTC)

The divisions break up the list of keys into manageable chunks. It doesn't matter to me how it is done, or even if there are no divisions, as long as whatever system used to divide the keys can be verified from a reliable source. -- Donald Albury 23:05, 9 September 2006 (UTC)

The template is somewhat confusing, as it does not distinguish between keys and municipalities/ensus designated places in the lists. In some cases a municipality or census designated place does cover just one key, but the CDPs of Key Largo and Tavernier are both on Key Largo (island), while the municipalities of Islamorada and Marathon each include four keys. The Tortugas Bank has been added to the template. As there are many banks, reefs, and even "keys" that are submerged, I think we need to either exclude submerged features, or include them all. Comments? -- Donald Albury 13:36, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

including separate submerged features might be a good idea, but not submerged features that are part of larger groups like the Dry Tortugas (we also don't include the individual keys of groups like the Dry Tortugas).--Ratzer 20:01, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

I've added Fort Jefferson, Florida to the template - I think it's status as a National Monument and as the largest masonry structure in the Western Hemisphere warrants it - but I rralise there will be people who know more about the Keys than me. As such, I've no objection if anyone thinks that the Fort doesn't belong and removes it... Grutness...wha? 12:17, 13 August 2012 (UTC)
