Rock Is a Lady's Modesty (Japanese: ロックは淑女の嗜みでして, Hepburn: Rokku wa Redi no Tashinami deshite, lit. "Rock Is a Lady's Pursuit/Interest") is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Hiroshi Fukuda . Lilisa Suzunomiya is a young student at the prestigious and elite Oshin Girls' Academy. However, having been adopted by a rich father through her mother's second marriage rather than being born into one, Lilisa has to work hard to put up the facade of being a cultured and sophisticated student in order to win the school's prized title of Noble Maiden, which includes giving up her dream of playing the guitar that she got from her biological father. However, a twist of fate brings her together with fellow student Otoha Kurogane, and she discovers Otoha's secret love for drums and rock music. After taking up her guitar once again, Lilisa and Otoha begin to secretly indulge in their love for rock music.

Lilisa Suzunomiya is a student who attends the prestigious Oshin Girls' Academy and is looked up highly by her peers. Despite her popularity, Lilisa feels suffocated by the school's conservative structure and high expectations, though she forces herself to fit in to become a Noble Maiden and bring honor to her family. Lilisa crosses paths with another popular student, Otoha Kurogane, and finds her intriguing. Lilisa then sees a guitar pick left on the ground after their meeting, and, finding it strange, takes it home. The next day, Lilisa sees Otoha attempting to find her guitar pick, but as the student body is watching, denies having any knowledge of it for fear of upsetting her good reputation. Lilisa decides to follow Otoha to the school's old music room, where she discovers that Otoha is a skilled drummer. Surprised to see Otoha acting contrary to her reputation and composed behavior, Lilisa returns the guitar pick and says she will not tell anyone. However, Otoha infers that Lilisa can play the guitar, noting how she correctly identified the guitar pick and has calluses on her fingers, and invites her to play the guitar using the pick. Lilisa is reluctant as she had previously given up guitar in her youth, but is offended after Otoha insinuates that she must not be good at it, prompting her to play with Otoha to prove herself. After playing, Otoha exclaims profanely that Lilisa's guitar skills are lackluster, shocking and angering Lilisa. | |||||||||||

Lilisa remains angered by Otoha's mocking comments the previous day, as Otoha continues to approach her on playing together again. Despite Otoha apologizing for her comments, Lilisa declares she has no further intention to speak to Otoha. Later during a class, Lilisa almost exposes her interest in rock music to her peers, leaving her embarrassed. Otoha then stalks Lilisa throughout the rest of the day, agitating Lilisa. At home, Lilisa struggles to play the violin, further straining her relationship with her stepsister Alice. She also reiterates her resolve in becoming a Noble Maiden to ease her mother's life in the Suzunomiya family. The next day, Lilisa encounters the school's council president and Noble Maiden Yukari Fujimurasaki. Lilisa aims to approach her to enlist in the student council, but she is interrupted by Otoha, who formally introduces her to Yukari. Annoyed at the interruption, Lilisa repeats she has no intention on associating herself with Otoha. Lilisa is asked by her peers after a class on her current obsession, leading her to think on her resolve. Lilisa approaches Otoha at the music room and questions her decision on choosing drums. Otoha elaborates that she is driven by passion and how it is uniquely hers alone; envious that she had to sacrifice her passion of playing guitar in her pursuit of becoming a Noble Maiden, Lilisa picks up the guitar to prove Otoha she has moved on from her passion. |
